1. Place the cuff evenly around the upper arm with the center over the brachial artery and the lower end just above the elbow.
2. Inflate the cuff until the radial pulse (the pulse on the wrist) is no longer felt.
3. Slowly deflate the cuff until the radial pulse reappears. The pressure at which this occurs is the systolic pressure (the top number in a blood pressure reading).
4. Deflate the cuff further and listen with a stethoscope placed above the brachial artery. You'll hear sounds with each heartbeat. The point where the sounds first appear corresponds to the systolic pressure.
5. Continue deflating the cuff until the sounds disappear. This point indicates the diastolic pressure (the bottom number in a blood pressure reading).
6. If it's difficult to hear the sounds, note the pressure at which the radial pulse reappears for an approximate systolic pressure.
7. Maintenance: Ensure regular comparison checks and calibration of sphygmomanometers for accuracy.
